　　报道说，举行婚宴时，新郎一般不饮酒。酒席上，新婚夫妇通常为客人敬酒。由报道可知，“敬酒”可表达为“to propose a toast”，有时也可单独用“toast”来表示。

　　“Toast”（烤面包片）表示“敬酒”最早可追溯到12世纪。据说，当时英国人喜欢将香喷喷的“toast”（烤面包片）浸到酒碗中，这样可以使酒的味道更加香醇可口。酒席上，人们通常会向贵宾频频举杯，盛赞其就像酒杯里的烤面包片一样，能让整个宴会熠熠星辉。于是，到了18世纪，toast逐渐就有了“敬酒”之意。此外，“toast”还可表示“祝酒辞”。
